Hi Sam! You’re originally from Lacombe, Alberta correct? Growing up in such a small city, how exposed to fashion were you?
Yes, I am from Lacombe! Growing up I wasn’t too exposed to fashion. I was a farm kid so it wasn’t a priority or anything I saw often, but I was always somewhat interested in it.
Have you always wanted to be a model?
I didn’t always want to be a model. When I was younger I wanted to do something with horses, but I started thinking I wanted to try modeling out when I was about 11.
Can you tell me the story of how you were first scouted and signed?
I was first scouted in West Edmonton Mall when I was 12. I was shocked! I really didn’t think I was model material. My parents weren’t too keen on the idea of modeling, so I didn’t explore it any further. Then I was scouted again in Red Deer when I was 13, and finally when I was 14 Mode asked my parents to let me do a model search in Calgary. Finally they let me try it out. I ended up getting third place in the search so they couldn’t really say no anymore!
You’re now represented by agencies all over the world. Where have you done most of your work and what is your favorite market to model in?
I think I have worked the most in Paris. I love working in Paris, but I don’t think anything beats New York.
What is the best modeling experience you’ve had thus far?
Shooting with [Steven] Meisel was my best experience so far. I was always so curious as to how the shoots for Italian Vogue worked… so to be able to experience it firsthand was incredible… It was so cool to see the hair, makeup, and styling all come together. I’m really thankful for the experience.
You’ve been featured in numerous magazines and fashion shows. Do you feel more comfortable in front of the camera or on the runway?
I don’t think I feel more comfortable with one more than the other, they are just different. I like being in front of the camera because it allows me to get creative and tell a story. Runway is just a rush though, and with the clothes, lights, location, music- everything comes together and it’s really exciting to be a part of.
Are there any aspects of modeling you are less fond of?
I am not fond of working a lot of jobs for free. Also long flights and model apartments!!
You’re originally a redhead. What made you go blonde and how do you feel about your platinum look?
After I finished high school and started modeling again I just didn’t have the interest from clients I was hoping to [have], so Mode decided that a new look might help me out. I’ve always wanted to try platinum though, so when they suggested it, I was all for it.
You have a very unique look and a personal style to match. Can you describe your style for me in three words?
This is tough! I would describe my style as effortless, whimsical, and bold.
Tell me a bit about your own philosophy on style and fashion?
I love to just throw on whatever I feel, but I love to layer things. I am obsessed with black clothing, and mostly just wear black. However, I love a great print and I love to mix mismatched prints together. Right now, I am really into sheer, leather, and lace- all in black of course.
Who is your personal style icon?
I honestly don’t really follow celebrity style or anything like that, but I can’t help but notice that everything Tilda Swinton wears is incredible.
Where are your favorite places to shop?
I rarely shop! I occasionally get things at H&M or thrift stores, but I`ve been wearing a lot of trade.
Who’s your favorite designer?
I love Raf Simons, Alexander McQueen, Olivier Theyskens, and Phoebe Philo. Prabal Gurung is becoming quite high on my list as well.
What would your dream fashion gig be?
I would love to work with Mert & Marcus, Camilla Akrans, Balenciaga, and Givenchy.
What are three words your friends would use to describe you:
Laid back, footloose, and fancy free. Haha that`s a hard question.
Can you tell me about some of your hobbies/ interests?
I love horseback riding more than anything. I also love hanging out with my friends, having dinner parties, playing cards, playing with our cat, Lucy, and going for walks.
Other than model what would your ideal occupation be?
I have no idea!!! Maybe something having to do with criminal justice.
You’ve been modeling since 2007, what have you learned from your years of experience?
That everything is really all about the right timing.
Where is your home base now?
I feel like New York is home now.
Have your thoughts on the fashion world and modeling changed since you first started?
I think I just understand the industry so much better now, than when I started.
Now, last but not least- what’s coming up next for you?
Just continuing to travel, go to castings, and hopefully keep working!
